Earlier this year I had a lot trouble getting to sleep and then staying asleep.  Call it stress related, a not-so-perfect diet or anything else, the point is that I found myself so tired all the time it was actually difficult to function.  So, I began to explore herbal remedies that might help me catch up on some zzz's.

After reading online about the benefits of lavender, I stumbled upon an article that suggested Lush's Sleepy Lotion was just what I'd been looking for.  If you google it, there are literally dozens of articles about the masses touting it as the best thing ever for a good nights sleep.  But... how is it possible that slathering on a lotion at night could be the answer I was looking for?

Could this be the holy grail I was looking for?


If you're anything like me, you can smell a Lush store at least 50 meters before you can see it which happened to be convenient on this occasion as I was keen to try out the Sleepy Lotion.  After chatting to a sales assistant about the product, I tried on the back of my hand but failed to smell anything because, well.. Lush have very strong smelling stores.  So I decided to take a punt, buy-and-try at home.

The key ingredients include Lavender, Oatmeal Infusion, Jojoba Oil, Cocoa Butter and Tonka Absolute, and the combination of these creates a wonderful, vanilla-esque, malty scent.  Jojoba and Cocoa Butter are well known for their moisturising properties, and in this formulation they create a whipped, creamy texture.  The lotion is a light purple colour (fitting because of the lavender), and melts into the skin very nicely.  When it came to testing out it's snooze-worthy rating, I applied it liberally all over so I could really test out how it worked.

Some nights there comes a point where if it haven't already fallen asleep, insomnia will kick in and I end up staying up much later resulting in broken, low quality sleep.  This also happens when I've been looking at my phone or laptop before going to bed, which I have now promised myself I'll break the habit this year (she says as she types this at 12.30am... yikes).  Aside from trying to break in new late night habits sans technology, one habit I'd be happy to stick to is applying this Sleepy Lotion each night.  Even if it didn't help with my sleep, it still smells lovely on my skin!



Well, it turns out I made a worthwhile decision *phew* and I can actually understand the hype over this product after many successful, sleep-full nights after lathering this magical stuff on.   Surprised?  Yes.  I'd never really think that a lotion could help with sleep quality.  Also, there is probably a (large) element of the placebo effect in play but hey, I'm not complaining if it means I get some quality shut eye.
